Mr. Gonzalez

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I grew up in Los Angeles schools and moved to the suburbs for the end of middle school and high school. I found it interesting how the various communities viewed each other with negative stereotypes and such, so when I decided to teach, I wanted to come back to L.A. to work in the communities where I grew up. I also believe teaching literacy and thinking is a way to fight injustice on the ground level. If students can communicate effectively and think critically, they will accomplish their goals and help build up their communities rather than being subject to the powers that be.

2. What is your favorite subject and why?

I love language, literature, reading and writing because it's how we communicate with people. I love talking to people, and I also enjoy how literature is a way for readers to experience life from other's perspectives and experiences.

3. How long have you been teaching?

11 years.

4. Why did you decide to work at Boyle Heights?

My grandfather grew up and went to school in Boyle Heights, so this neighborhood has always held a special place in my heart and family. When the opportunity to teach here came up, I couldn't help but inquire more.

Working in an options school is important because I want to learn how to help students that have not been able to succeed in our system.

5. If you could work at any other job but a teacher what would it be?

  • Rockstar

  • writer/poet

  • Race car driver

  • Stay at home dad

  • Dancing

  • Going to the beach
